The case for Kawaguchiko

Distance makes Fuji, and Kawaguchiko has the right amount: close enough to fill the frame, far enough to show the whole cone. The lake gives the reflection shot, Oishi Park adds the flower foreground, and the Chureito Pagoda — about 400 steps up at Arakurayama Sengen Park — produces the single most reproduced Fuji photograph there is. Several bus loops refuse the choice: the flagship runs the 5th Station, then Hakone’s cruise and ropeway, with a Shinkansen return, at $151. For a first and possibly only Fuji day, the combination is the insurance policy: if the mountain sulks, Hakone entertains; if it shows, Kawaguchiko-side stops deliver the photograph.
